THE MUSICIANS

Donald Armstrong (violin) was born in Wellington, where he started early professional studies with the NZBC Orchestral Trainees (later the Schola Musica) and the NZ National Youth Orchestra. He joined the NZSO at the age of 19. Two years later he completed a post-graduate diploma at Mannes College, New York, and a Masters degree at the New England Conservatory in Boston. In 1983 he was appointed Principal Second Violin of the Tivoli Sinfoniorkester in Denmark and soon after become Concertmaster of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice in France. He returned to New Zealand in 1987 as Associate Concertmaster of the NZSO, a position he still holds. Donald was Music Director of the NZ Chamber Orchestra from 1987 to 2004. His incisive leadership was a major force in creating the dynamic and exciting style of the NZCO heard both in live concert and on its many commercial recordings.

He has appeared as soloist with the NZSO and made frequent solo appearances with the NZ Chamber Orchestra. He also performs regularly with his own chamber group, the Amici Ensemble, playing chamber works ranging from very small to large ensembles. Donald Armstrong plays a violin by Nicolo Gagliano of 1754.

Sarah Watkins
(piano) has enjoyed an impressive career as chamber musician, collaborative partner and recording artist, performing throughout Japan, England and the United States with some of America's leading instrumentalists. She holds both a Doctor of Musical Arts and Masters in collaborative piano from the Juilliard School in New York City, and a Bachelors from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. Academic highlights include coordinating the collaborative piano programme at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, and working for several years on the music faculty of Purchase College, New York. As a United States resident for fourteen years, Sarah was a staff pianist at Juilliard, Yale University and the Aspen Music Festival. She now devotes much of her time and effort to playing and touring with the NZTrio and appeared earlier in 2001 in Paekakariki.

Mary Gow (piano) was born in Lower Hutt and now lives in Paekakariki. A graduate of Victoria University in arts and music, she won a Belgian Government Scholarship in 1980 which took her to Belgium to study at the renowned Conservatoire de Bruxelles where she won First Prizes in piano and chamber music and then gained Higher Diplomas in both. Having for many years made her home in Brussels, since returning to New Zealand, she has retained her European musical connections and still spends part of each year in Belgium. For the last four years, Mary has been the organiser of the Mulled Wine Concert series in Paekakariki and she has also helped with other events such as the recent Concert for Christchurch put on in the village. This year she has commissioned a composition for orchestra, piano and narrator called "The Baboons who live by the River" by Alexander McCall Smith and composer Tom Cunningham and will world premiere it in December in Brussels.
