See, Hear and Feel the NZSO in a Whole New Light
Lovers of digital performance art and cutting-edge classical music will see the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in living colour when the NZSO and visionary video artist Dnation present In a New Light at the Wellington Town Hall at 7.30pm on May 7.
For its annual Made in New Zealand showcase of the country’s finest classical music, the NZSO and award-winning visual arts specialist Dnation – also known as Robert Appierdo – will explore what happens when sight and sound come together.
Donation will create a “live cinema experience” and brilliantly light up the Orchestra by projecting large-scale moving images onto a screen behind the musicians, as they play.
This dreamlike flow of images will visually extend exhilarating and powerfully expressive music by acclaimed New Zealand composers, including Seikilos by John Psathas, The Floating Bride, The Crimson Village by Ross Harris and Legend of the Trojan Bird by rising star Claire Cowan. The programme also includes Waters of Peneios by cello prodigy and composer Arnold Trowell, whose work won acclaim in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s.
In a New Light will be the first public performance of The Floating Bride, The Crimson Village by Harris and poet Vincent O’Sullivan, sung by soprano Jenny Wollerman.
In addition to the live cinema element, In a New Light features the world premiere of Ross Harris’ Violin Concerto No. 1 performed by English virtuoso violinist Anthony Marwood – one of the most sought-after violinists of his generation, known for the intensity and emotional force of his playing.
In a New Light is conducted by meteoric young New Zealander Tecwyn Evans. The concert promises to immerse the audience in an electric atmosphere of gemstone colour, swirling light and orchestral sound. It is a unique chance to experience the power of contemporary classical New Zealand music combined with a living video artwork - casting the NZSO in a whole new light.
Concertgoers can also enjoy the In a New Light after-party at Wellington bar Matterhorn, featuring live music and a special cocktail inspired by the NZSO.
