Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori - Raninikura's Hook, Line & Sing-along Waiata

July 4th 2016
This week is a time for all New Zealander's to celebrate te reo Maori (the Maori language.) To kick off Ratahi, we have a waiata "Te Tuaititanga" by Tai Wananga student Raninikura Waitai-Henare.

Raninikura composed the music and set lyrics written by her Kaumatua Papa Te Kai.

Raninikura recorded the waiata at The Porch Recording Studio with our Schools Programme Mentor Horomona Horo, funded by the NZ Music Commission.

"I grew up in the world of Kapa Haka. It always keeps me grounded, and it also makes me never forget who I am and my culture." When composing "Te Tuaititanga," she looked to the land for inspiration. "What inspired me to write this waiata was living at the very top of the North Island. All my life I grew up around the oceans, mountains and the beautiful wonders of the north. I was pretty much brought up in Tikanga Maori also."
