The song of NZ Music Month is a chance for all school children across all years to write the song that best sums up being a Kiwi.

THE SONG OF NZ MUSIC MONTH 2010
 
The song of NZ Music Month is a chance for all school children across all years to write a song that could win them great prizes and be heard all around the country during NZ Music Month in May 2010.
 
There will be a prize of $500 for your school, $500 for the composer, and prizes for best lyrics, best performance and best singer/s.
 
THEME
Write a song about being a Kiwi. It could be personal, universal, literal, surreal etc.


All musical styles will be accepted.
 
SONGWRITERS

Songs will be accepted from individuals, or groups of any size and the performers may or may not be the composer. If the song is written in a language other than English, please supply an English translation.


WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The winning song will be judged on its general appeal, how it relates to being a Kiwi, and the following criteria:
 
MUSIC
Standard of musical composition and its components: Intro, verse, chorus, hook, solo, outro etc.
Song melody and rhythmic content of the lyrics
Dynamics (loud and soft variations)
Backing vocals/harmonies (optional)

LYRICS
Be about what it means to be a New Zealander
Need to be easy to understand on the recording
A good flow (arrangement of words per line of music)
Rhyming is optional
A lyric sheet must be provided

PERFORMANCE
A good sound quality
Clarity of singing/speaking
Musical instruments well played, accuracy in timing and notes
Integrity of the piece as a whole (style of music and lyrics should match)
The length of the song: Aim between 2 and 4 minutes.



ENTRY CRITERIA
Entry is free but all contestants must be NZ residents and be enrolled at and attend a school for at least 15 hours per week. If you leave school during the competition your song will be disqualified.

One song only per student/group.

Songs may be collaborative but all writers must be acknowledged.

All contestants must be no older than 19 years of age on May 1st 2010.

The competition is for unsigned bands and individuals only. No student/group may sign a recording contract prior to or during the competition without prior consent from the competition organisers at the NZMC.
 
JUDGES

The competition will be judged by the NZ Music Commission and a panel of judges to be announced soon.

The judge’s decisions will be final.

HOW TO SEND YOUR SONG
Email your song as an MP3. Also email the title, composer/s, the name of your school, a printable copy of the lyrics and chord suggestions to education@nzmusic.org.nz

Please do not send a music video.

Or: Post your song as a CD, (clearly label with the title, composer, school) with a printable copy of the lyrics and chord suggestions to:

We won’t be able to return entries, so please make yourselves a copy to keep.
 
COPYRIGHT
You will need to sign the Entry form declaring this is your own work.
All students 16 and over are required to sign the Entry Form (if under 16, you must have the signature of a parent or guardian on the entry form.)
By entering you also allow the NZMC free license to use your song until December 31st 2010.
