Teach This Waiata by Young Talent Raninikura Waitai-Henare
Though the lyrical content is not related to Matariki, we are proud to present a stunning waiata by Tai Wananga student Raninikura Waitai-Henare; "Te Tuaititanga." Raninikura composed the music and set lyrics written by her Kaumatua Papa Te Kai.
Raninikura recorded the waiata at Porch Studios with our Schools Programme Mentor Horomona Horo, funded by the NZ Music Commission.
Raninikura Waitai-Henare comes from a whanau of musicians; with her grandfather Bundy Waitai, mother Sandra, father Chris, uncles Daniel and Tiaki, aunties Samantha and Hera, sister Tia and brother-in-law Rawiri all in the family band. She is also a performer in Te Rōpū Kapa Haka o Muriwhenua, established by her parents in 2010.
"I grew up in the world of Kapa Haka. It always keeps me grounded, and it also makes me never forget who I am and my culture." When composing "Te Tuaititanga," she looked to the land for inspiration. "What inspired me to write this waiata was living at the very top of the North Island. All my life I grew up around the oceans, mountains and the beautiful wonders of the north. I was pretty much brought up in Tikanga Maori also."
Having moved to Hamilton to further her education, "This song was based about my life living in the far north, about how all the oceans meet, the land, the mountains and the food that grows."Back to Education News
