Musicians Mentoring

November 6th 2009
Chris Pascoe posted a video on YouTube documenting his students at Rotorua Lakes High School taking part in the Musicians Mentoring Mentoring programme.

Chris is the Head of Department for music at Rotorua Lakes.  As a highly skilled teacher and musician he has transformed the RLHS Music Department in recent years.

Take a look at Jimmy Christmas, Anna Coddington and Horomona Hora in the following clip as they mentor RLHS students:

Chris is a great believer in the NZ Music Commission’s Musicians Mentoring programme.  Chris organised a schedule of students over a Friday and Saturday to workshop with one of the three mentors either one-on-one or in groups - as well as a large group workshop for the school focusing on Taonga Puoro.

“I love the communication that is happening here. There is this direct line that is going from the mentors to the pupils so it’s not ‘mentor and pupil’ at all, its ‘musician and mentor’, we’ve got coaching happening ...we’ve not got ‘school’”    (Chris Pascoe, HOD Music, Rotorua Lakes High School)

His students were totally enthusiastic about what they had learnt. Their only gripe was “we need more time with these awesome mentors”.
