Mark Saturday 17th April on your musical calendar. International Record Store Day is back again in 2010!
The original idea for Record Store Day was conceived by American record store owner, Chris Brown in 2007 as a universal day’s celebration of the unique culture surrounding independent record stores worldwide. It’s a celebration recognising that independent Record Stores are different from almost all other forms of retail. They aren’t like a shoe store or a pharmacy and they aren’t slaves to corporate culture, or branded links in a chain. A good record store is a place where people are united by a common bond: a love of music, regardless of its style, fashion or creators. Most independent record stores have grown organically, and reflect their local communities, and the personalities of their owners and staff. They’re anti-mall trend-buckers - oases of cool in an otherwise cookie-cutter retail nightmare.
Record Store Day is growing in profile around the globe partly due to the strong support received from recording artists and their messages. Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures) is 2010’s official cultural ambassador. Many artists are drawing attention to the difference between the living, breathing, social and physical world of record stores and the popular but ultimately isolated world of cyberspace.
