Bullfrog Rata

Bullfrog Rata

About the Artist

He may not have sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads, and his accent may be more Manawatu than Mississippi, but Bullfrog Rata is a bluesman heart and soul.

Starting out in the late eighties as a busker on the streets of towns throughout New Zealand because, as he recounts, “no-one wanted to play with me”. He is now one of New Zealand’s premier blues artist who has notched up an impressive list of support slot credits which include, among others, Tina Turner, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Charley Pride, Junior Wells and Canned Heat.

He has played for shoppers on the streets of Wairoa and for diplomats on the top floor of New Zealand House in London. He has played for gang members in Taumaranui and been helicoptered to private parties on Waiheke Island.

No matter what line up he appears in (the Midge Marsden duo or band, the Shayn Wills trio, The Legal Tender Band, his own band The Undergators or as a powerhouse solo performer), your cares and worries will disappear as the beat, the sound, the music, the movement, the voice, all conspire in one riveting package to take you to another place, somewhere with the wind at your face and the entire world at your feet.
