5 Bands for 5 Bucks: Running Stitch, Velvetland, Daniel Armstrong & the Monsoons

November 21st 2018
3 bands for 5 bucks. Sounds almost like a deal from the '90s. But no, you haven't gone back in time, it's very much in the here and now.

This Thursday November 22, K'Rd's Thirsty Dog hosts 3 acts linked by friendship and indie pop, but each approaching both from different angles.

Running Stitch have had a good year. The title track to their EP ‘Brightside' was hand-picked to feature on the Spotify Alternative Tracks playlist, and their follow-up single ‘Hunted' reached #2 on the 95bFM Top Ten.

Running Stitch started as the solo project of singer/songwriter Aletta Ashdown. Evoking some of the best female artists and female-led bands of previous eras, reviewer Ania Glowacz said of Running Stitch's debut EP ‘It's On': "A low-key PJ Harvey, or Cat Power reference wouldn't be too far off" (NZ Musician), and the gruntier songs even bring to mind the likes of Elastica.

And with new opportunities comes a new line-up: Running Stitch are pleased to introduce Tye Stott (drums), Rodger Scott (bass) and brand new guitarist Steve Wiki - who will be quite busy on Thursday, as he's also in Velvetland.

Velvetlandhave been loosely described as alt-folk pop. The band craft guitar-driven power pop with a nod to wide-ranging influences including the Beatles, Wilco, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, R.E.M, Teenage Fanclub and the Velvet Underground.

They'll be joined by up-and-comers Daniel Armstrong and the Monsoons. Daniel writes songs about the end of the world and injustice, and all his ideas are stolen from artists like Van Morrison, Nina Simone, Patti Smith - the list is endless. He will be releasing these songs in 2018 and touring his current home New Zealand until told otherwise...
