Brookes & Johnstone's Album 'When Summer Falls, Break Down the Walls'

August 19th 2022
Producer/educator Zed Brookes and farm worker Andrew Johnstone have been making music together for 35 years, and When Summer Falls, Break Down the Walls is their second full-length album.

You can see some of the album's recording process in Costa Botes' new film When the Cows Come Home, currently screening at the NZ International Film Festival.
Friday August 19th 1.00pm Rialto DUNEDIN
Saturday August 20th 2.30pm Rialto DUNEDIN
Saturday August 20th 5.30pm Lido HAMILTON
Sunday August 21st 1.15pm Lido HAMILTON
Tuesday August 23rd 1.15pm Lido HAMILTON

Whilst this album isn't the film's actual soundtrack (the film's music is composed by Tom McLeod), Johnstone's love of making music is a key part of the film.

So how did this all come about? Johnstone explains, “The album was basically complete when I found myself in the company of filmmaker Costa Botes (Forgotten SilverThe Making of 'The Lord of the Rings'). He’d come up from Wellington to film my cows but was increasingly turning the camera on me, which is how we all ended up in the studio."

Roger Bowie of Muzic.net.nz says the album is "full of funky soul dark grooves with spoken lyrics, call and response questions like “who’s that standing in the door”, and flourishing keyboard answers...If you are a Breaks Co-op fan, you will surely like Brookes & Johnstone."
