OP Lilypad Signs to Sunreturn, Shares New Single 'Dub'
OP Lilypad is the new musical project of Jonathan Glenday, a musician based in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Known for his furious guitar work in Long Distance Runner, and making deep dance floor anthems as Fly Nights, OP Lilypad showcases Glenday's affinity for stillness, creating lush ambient textures by mixing field recordings with analogue electronics.
Today OP Lilypad shares the new single dub, and announces their debut album OPLP (out digitally on April 13, 2023 via Sunreturn).
Like all of the songs on OPLP dub started as an extended jam, with Glenday making adjustments over a number of years until he felt there was a coherent feeling or some kind of story. dub is a deep listen, with a mysterious, unknown aural presence.
Glenday opens up about the intent behind the track, “I wanted to create something dense, humid and a little percussive. I also like an element of roughness which makes things sound more natural.
“A lot of my other music has been quite sample based,” reflects Glenday. “For this project I made an effort to stop using samples and focus on sounds that were all recorded or created by me. There's some mallet, modular synth, tape loop and a field recording made in Tokyo.”
“dub was the last track on OPLP to be complete and I feel great about it. The toughest part of making this music was knowing when a track was done - ambient music is so open.”
