Today Smokefree Tangata Beats Winners Jam & Jelly Release Their Self-titled Debut Single.

April 2nd 2021
South Auckland based soul-RnB band Jam & Jelly is the joining together of 6 Papatoetoe High School music students.

Their track Jam & Jelly was written and performed by the band as a part of their winning entry into the prestigious Smokefree Tangata Beats competition - a nationwide, original music youth event that recognises and reflects the unique cultural identity of Aotearoa New Zealand and the South Pacific. The acts wrote and performed their songs last year, working within the restrictions around socials gatherings to participate in Smokefree Tangata Beats 'On Screen' - an adaption of the live programme, working online via video submission.

The judges were musicians Seth Haapu and Priya Sami, along with Ash Wallace from NZ On Air. About the winners Seth Haapu said “those recognised are the leading voices of a generation who are proudly telling the stories of our time through an outstanding expression of culture and music”.
With their winning prize package, which included a NZ On Air New Single grant and $3k worth of music gear from the NZ Rockshop, the act was able to fully record the song and film a video. The track was originally planned to come out earlier in the year, but was pushed due to the week-long lockdown in Tāmaki Makaurau at the end of February.

Singer Skylah Hewitt said that the single "is all about us being confident and sassy about who we are."

"Having music in my life has been like having the voice of what I want to say to the world," said the 18-year-old. "There is so many different things that you could say when you sing, and I think that for all of us we can say that music isn’t just music to us, music is our voice in our own way and our own instrument, vocal or not… whether you’re singing words or not, there is a lot of emotion that goes into that."
