Announcing the APRA Maioha Award Finalists

July 25th 2012
It's Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori, and APRA are excited to announce the finalists for the APRA Maioha Award, which seeks to recognise excellence and celebrate Te Reo Maori within contemporary music.

The finalists are:

Pounamu written by Ahorangi Winitana, Sidney Diamond & Josh Fountain, performed by Ahorangi featuring Sidney Diamond

Matahîapo written by Te Awanui Reeder, David Atai & Scotty Morrison, performed by AWA

I Am A Child written and performed by Ria Hall

The announcement of the finalists coincides with Maori Language Week, 23 July to 29th July. The independent panel of judges consider the creative content of the music and lyrics along with the use of Te Reo Maori when selecting the finalists.

“The 3 finalist songs are all very different yet individually show a strength and authenticity in Te Reo, whilst maintaining a contemporary feel. The quality of songwriting has set a new standard within this Award", said the judges of the finalist songs.

The number of songs entered this year nearly doubled from 2011, showing an encouraging resurgence of Te Reo Maori in contemporary music being produced this year.

The name Maioha embraces creativity and translates as “a spontaneous composition which reflects a very deep emotional understanding”.

The winner of the APRA Maioha Award will be announced and awarded at the APRA Silver Scroll Awards. To learn more about the APRA Silver Scroll Awards, including past winners and performances, please visit
