MENZA Launches Safer Spaces in Music Education Aotearoa Initiative | Website & Resources Live Now!
Safer Spaces in Music Education Aotearoa (SSMEA) are a group of music educators working to make safer spaces in music education.
Inspired by attending a SoundCheck Aotearoa workshop in 2021, the group has been working together to create resources and professional development workshops in response to an increasing number of reports of sexual harm in music education.
Together, SSMEA represent the full spectrum of music education in Aotearoa, from early childhood to tertiary, as well as studio/private/itinerant music teachers, music therapists, and community music providers who support youth. Most importantly, they are listening to the voices of their ākonga/students.
SSMEA's kaupapa is to collaborate openly with the music education community, particularly minority groups and voices, to create meaningful positive change in music education.
