NZ Music Month 2019: Discover Live

April 16th 2019
It’s not long until NZ Music Month is 2019 underway. There is a huge amount to share with you in the coming weeks – Here’s an brief overview for starters!

The theme for NZ Music Month 2019 is DISCOVER LIVE.  We hope New Zealanders will discover their new favorite homegrown live act, and support the local live music scene across the country.

NZ Music Month has over 1,000 performances by local artists each year, so there are plenty of opportunities to get out and see some live music.  Alongside our trusty local venues, there are also shows planned in museums, libraries, galleries and public spaces across Aotearoa.

And NZ Music Month won’t only be in venues this year – we are kicking off the celebrations in Dunedin on 1 May with the New Zealand premier of the feature-length documentary The Chills – The Triumph and Tragedy of Martin Phillipps at the iconic Regent Theatre. The premiere will feature a special musical performance and tickets to attend are open to the public and on sale here.  The film had its world premier at the SXSW Film Festival last month to exceptional reviews and opens nationwide in New Zealand on 2 May.

Speaking of screens, we are super excited that Anthems: New Zealand’s Iconic Hits is coming soon to Prime.  More details on this series telling the stories of iconic New Zealand songs will be revealed soon.

There is lots going on in schools all over New Zealand, including the Musicians Mentoring in Schools Programme in eight centres; the heats for Smokefree Rockquest and Tangata Beats; and Hook, Line & Sing-a-long on Friday 31 May, where schools across the country will sing Aotearoa, N? Te Katoa (New Zealand, Belonging To All) by Lucy Summerfield from Motueka High School.

There are seminars across the month this year – including Independent Music NZ’s Going Local series from 8-11 May in Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin with special guest Will Evans from Bandcamp; the two-day YAMI Sounz Summit in Wanaka on 12 & 13 May; Rotorua Music Month have Professional Development Seminars on 11 & 25 May; and the annual NZ Music Month Summit produced by the Music Managers Forum and the Music Commission will be announced very soon.

We will be profiling a New Zealand venue every day on our social media for the entirety of the month, and feature a series on tips from New Zealand artists about looking after yourself on the road.  Resources focusing on live music and touring will be going up on the Music Commission website throughout May.

Finally, coming up on the last Friday of May is Love Your Local Venue Day.  We’d love to see people all over New Zealand getting out and seeing shows all month – but especially on Friday 31 May.  Nothing shows your support for local music like turning up – and you might just discover your favourite new band.

NZ Music Month is run by the NZ Music Commission, with the support of APRA AMCOS, Independent Music NZ, the Music Managers Forum, NZ On Air and Recorded Music NZ.  The purpose of NZ Music Month to celebrate music from New Zealand, and the people who make it.
