This year four bands and artists from New Zealand will be making the journey to Brighton UK. Glass Owls, Black City Lights, French For Rabbits, and Ezra Vine will be appearing at their own showcases as well as the NZ@The Great Escape party which will be taking place at The Spiegeltent on Friday the 9th of May.

Glass Owls

The music of Glass Owls is steeped in the classics, with an uncompromisingly modern edge.

New Zealanders, Tomas Nelson and Anthony Metcalf, appear at The Great Escape on their first overseas foray ahead of the release their debut album ‘Out From The Darkness'.

It combines the brutal honesty of vintage gear with modern production
techniques, heart-on-the-sleeve lyrics with tempestuous vocals. Singer Tomas Nelson's rich timbre is often compared to the likes of Julian Casablancas, Jim Morrison and Roy Orbison.

To date, Glass Owls have released a 6 track EP "Dead Love", toured New Zealand extensively, performed at IMNZ's Going Global showcase, and shared stages with local exports Cut Off Your Hands, Popstrangers, Tiny Ruins and Collapsing Cities. The band have spent 2013 in the studio with producer Djeisan Suskov (Artisan Guns, Dear Time's Waste) perfecting and preparing for their debut come June 6th.

Black City Lights

Comprised of producer Calum Robb and vocalist Julia Catherine Parr, Black City Lights create soaring and spacious soundtracks to midnight drives, back-alley cigarettes, and regretful yeses.Having polished their live set by supporting the likes of Grimes, Baths, Daedalus, and Van She, Black City Lights headed off to the USA for 3 month tour in support of their 2013 debut album Another Life, which included showcases at CMJ and CBGB Festival.

Having kicked off 2014 by being part of Red Bull's Sound Select Series in New Zealand, Black City Lights will also be touring the UK and EU for two months, where they will also be showcasing at the Great Escape Festival as well as supporting, The Naked and Famous, over 5 dates throughout Europe and London.

"Fountainous vocals flow, synthesizers swoon" - IMPOSE Magazine

"Their debut EP is simply stunning" - The Work Magazine

"Black City Lights has caught everyone completely off guard with their musical professionalism and dusky, enveloping mood... the entirety of Parallels plays with an effortless genius" - In Your Speakers

"Black City Lights is too good to ignore... They have our attention in a big way" - Witness This

French For Rabbits

Somewhat hidden away, in the seaside village of Waikuku Beach, New Zealand you will find the haunting dream-folk duo ‘French for Rabbits'. The unusually named couple released their first EP ‘Claimed by the Sea' in 2012, which was nominated for ‘Folk Album of the Year' and went on to receive radio play in their homeland and on BBC 6 and Amazing Radio in the UK.

In 2013 they travelled to Europe for the first time, performing a series of intimate house concerts throughout Germany and Switzerland, and small festival performances in the UK.

"Rawness in its most intimate, reflective form. Brooke Singer's voice, a smoky, cooling whisper, channels the kind of vulnerability most of us keep hidden deep down inside, and for a moment, it's almost as though we've caught a glimpse of her soul" - Consequences of Sound.

Ezra Vine

Ezra Vine is a multi-instrumentalist obsessed with escapism, indulging his melodic fantasies among handclaps, and the waltz of bass drums.

First single ‘Celeste', is an infectious celebration of anticipation, combining an ear-worm acoustic riff with an army of floor toms, Beach Boys backing vocals, Miike Snow piano clusters, and a lilting, Shins-like vocal. Vine's love for ambiguous Cohen-style lyrics mashes with immediate imagery (Brian Wilson, anybody?) resulting in an energetic tune that aches for a love lost (or was it a love imagined? Either way, he won't tell us.) and is sure as heck to get you dancing. In Vine's own words, Celeste is ‘an exploration of optimism, confusion, and the often blurred lines between reality and desire.'

Recorded in a small bedroom in late 2012, armed only with one microphone, a macbook pro, and any instrument he could lay his hands on, Vine meticulously recorded each and every instrument, breathing life into a handful of tunes that would soon become unofficially dubbed the ‘Les Enfants EP'. The resulting work was a collision of immediate lyricism, haunting falsetto, and counter-melodies, woven through folk sensibilities.

Brooklyn, NYC-based webzine Dingus are quoted as saying the work is "Somehow floating above the showmanship of 2013 ...", akin to "Of Monsters & Men with some dashes of Edward Sharp and Fun", adding "There is something special about getting transported back to a specific musical memory in one's own life."

In November 2013 Celeste was released in New Zealand through Vine's own label ‘Mythologie.' The single peaked #1 on the local iTunes singer songwriter chart and #4 on the overall chart and #1 on Spotify. The song was also the most added song at radio the same week.
Vine is also working ceaselessly in his newly christened ‘Mythologie Studios' on an EP due to drop mid 2014 worldwide
