Outward Sound is pleased to announce the 1st round of grant recipients for 2014.

Four International Music Market Development grants and one Business Development grant were awarded to the following:

Connan Mockasin

Described by Clash Music as "a true cosmonaut of inner space," Connan Mockasin has been wowing critics and audiences alike with his new album Caramel and his unparalleled live shows.

The album explores different regions of Mockasin's singular galaxy, guided by his truly adventurous songwriting that favors reconfigured pop structures with a skewed funk sensibility. And it has a concept..

"It starts with the dolphin [from the debut album] leaving, and the boss (the man) who is so in love with the dolphin is sad, and then it kicks into the new album, and he is happier. But there's a car race and a crash..."

With the US release of Caramel through label Mexican Summer Connan will expand his focus into that country with multiple tours including showcasing in and around SXSW 2014.

In addition - if Caramel wasn't enough - Mockasin has also been writing more material for Charlotte Gainsbourg after penning the exquisite "Out Of Touch" for the actress/singer's 2012 mini-album, Stage Whisper. It's another sign that Mockasin is going places, but at his own pace - just as Caramel suggests the process of melting and taking on a new shape, a new taste. That is the true sound of Connan Mockasin.

Batucada Sound Machine

When musicians are curious about the sonic vocabularies of other cultures, yet have enough trust in their own instincts, then you will get the kind of ecstatic explosion of styles found in Batucada Sound Machine.

With a line-up that has included Maori, Brazilian, Zimbabwean and New Zealand Pakeha players, this band brings together traditions from different parts of the planet to create something unselfconscious and new; something that defies you to stay still or silent.

After receiving rave reviews at WOMAD, Sziget Festival, Horizonte Festival, Sfinks Festival, Festival Nuits du Sud and other major festivals in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 Batucada Sound Machine are returning to European in 2014 to further their European reach with the release of their third studio album and a massive touring schedule.

Shapeshifter NZ Ltd

Record-breaking New Zealand tours, scene-setting appearances at festivals like Glastonbury, The Big Chill, Big Day Out and Parklife, sold-out performances across Europe, worlds-colliding collaborations with Symphony Orchestras, multiple music awards, four EPs and five LPs - three with platinum sales - and an army of fans who return to relive the experience time and time again: the towering achievements of Shapeshifter, the future-shocked soul outfit from Christchurch.

With the huge popularity for Electronic Dance Music in North America demand has been growing for Shapeshifter to finally make their presence known and start shaking the foundations of the concert halls of the USA and Canada. The tour begins at the legendary World Ski and Snowboard Festival in Whistler, BC so we expect some fairly hefty avalanche activity as well.

"If they continue their upward trajectory, [Shapeshifter will] surely leave the same imprint on audiences Stateside and add to their honor roll of three previous platinum selling albums." - MTV Iggy

Since releasing their debut EP Claimed by the Sea in March 2012, they have gathered a dedicated fan-base around the globe with handwritten letters and home-assembled albums.

On the other side of the world, BBC 6's Gideon Coe, Tom Ravenscroft, and Chris Hawkins, The Shed's Mark Coles, and Amazing Radio have championed their singles, including their latest release Goat. Sharing the stage will be current touring partners, Nashville-based fiddle duo 10 String Symphony, whom they met while recording their debut album in Nashville last year.
