Indie-folk singer-songwriter Ben Chavasse (pronounced sha-vass) releases ‘Letdown’ on 26th June, 2025, the first single from his upcoming debut album, Boxing.
Ben Chavasse is no stranger to dedication, growth, and patience, having quietly worked on his craft since winning Smokefree Rockquest as a 16-year-old. Ten years later, he feels ready.
The seeds of ‘Letdown’ were planted seven years ago, as Chavasse returned to his childhood bedroom in Tauranga to visit family, after moving away for university in Tāmaki Makaurau. The shifting finger-style progressions served as a cathartic release after a few intense and transformative experiences.
‘Letdown’ opens with an off-kilter shuffling beat, leaving ample room for Chavasse’s distinctive voice that soars into a full release with robust strings and slide guitar.
Influenced by the likes of Tiny Ruins, Tom Waits, Angel Olsen, Bob Dylan, Joanna Newsom, Japanese Breakfast and Alex G, Ben Chavasse’s lyric-forward approach seamlessly blends the indie-folk genre with influences from rock, punk, and jazz.
For Ben, songwriting is a way of making sense of the community and experiences that have shaped him. ‘Letdown’ marks Ben Chavasse’s self-assured arrival through tender and reflective storytelling. The single is co-produced and engineered by Michael Howell (SKILAA) and mastered by Jonathan Pearce (The Beths).
