With a long history working behind the curtain, NZ rock trio Sandfly have finally come forth to release their long-awaited self-titled debut album. Today they have released a teaser single, ‘Long Way From Home’ to give the people a taster as to what they can expect from the home-brewed sound from this album.
‘Long Way From Home’ follows the story of a boy who finds himself lost in an unfamiliar place, surrounded by strangers who do not welcome him. This song is one of many pieces that make up the story of the debut album. Interconnected themes and hidden meanings behind lyrics add an extra layer to the music for the listener, making this album less of a listen and more of an experience.
The songs on the album ‘Sandfly’ are inspired by a variety of different ideas, some of which are far-fetched and psychedelic, while others more down-to-earth and simple. These ideas were carefully curated together to create the album’s intended experience which was to take the listener on journey through the universe of Sandfly both lyrically and sonically. Titles such as ‘Let Me Drive My Car’ and ‘T.G.S’ certainly show the musical prowess of the band and their ability to write very different genres of music.
It is also important to mention that these songs were recorded, mixed and mastered all by the original musicians themselves. They wanted to send a message to others that expensive recording equipment and instruments aren’t needed to make good music. “We wanted to show everyone that if you put your mind and soul into the music that you have created, you can capture the exact feeling you’re after,” explained Jack Colley – drummer of the band. “I think the home-brewed sound we have created doesn’t take away from the music, in fact I strongly believe the album would not have the same feel if we hadn’t done these creation processes ourselves.”
While the album allows listeners to explore the recorded sound of Sandfly, the live scene is where they show their true colours. Having played many shows in both competitions and headline ticketed acts in venues across the country, Sandfly’s talent is backed by years of experience. This year, the band intends to take their live act to the next level, playing for larger crowds and putting together a more polished show.
“With our album finally making it to the limelight and the chance to play to thousands at the end of this year, I think we’re all ready to take our musical journey to new heights,” says guitarist Thomas Brooks.
