NZ Indie Rock Artist Evie Bamford Announces Satirical and Jazz-Infused Debut, ‘Money Bag’

Tāmaki Makaurau-based indie rock artist Evie Bamford is thrilled to announce the release of her first single ‘Money Bag’ on 28th November, as well as her debut headline show at Ponsonby Social Club on Saturday 6th December.

Recorded live on a farm in Matakana by engineer Ally Doe and self-produced by Evie, ‘Money Bag’ is a jazz-centric indie rock track with a killer trumpet solo, satirical lyrics, and a metric modulation that leads to a synth-heavy bridge.

‘Money Bag’ takes aim at the harsh realities of career pressure, capitalism, and the 40-hour work week that many 20-somethings face – especially in Aotearoa’s unforgiving cost of living and unemployability climate.

Mixed by Tom Broome and featuring Rory Johns (keys, synth), Hugo Butler (bass), Jeremy Richardson (drums), James MacEwan (trumpet, vocals), and Evie’s own guitar and vocals, the chorus refrain “it’s just my life anyway, it’s just my time all day” attempts to ironically downplay the huge roles that work and money play in our lives.

Evie shares; “It’s beyond exciting to finally share the first track from my solo project, something I’ve been quietly building for a long time. I wrote ‘Money Bag’ during a period when I felt completely stuck. I was desperate for change (and honestly, a bigger pay-cheque), but with limited job opportunities in Aotearoa and the rising cost of living, I couldn’t see a way out. Writing this song helped me process the ridiculousness of it all – the pressure to find purpose and stability in your twenties while also wanting to feel young and free. This absurdity is what I tried to capture in the tongue-in-cheek lyrics and instrumental bridge.”

Evie will celebrate the release with her first-ever headline show at Ponsonby Social Club on Saturday 6th December. Tickets will be available shortly via UnderTheRadar.
