Following the release of their ālready very well-received new album Corridors of Light on Thursday October 16th, Silk Cut are sending their new single ‘Godlike I’ out into the world. (It’s already soared straight to No. 2 on the 95bFM Top Ten!).
The song’s writer Jusitin McLean says, “‘Godlike I’ Is about power and state-sanctioned killing; those who claim to be the good guys while they bring death and destruction in the name of “security”. It’s about the cognitive dissonance of killing by remote control – finish your shift and brush the crumbs from your shirt.
Who made you god?”
‘Godlike I’ is from the third long player by Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland indie-rock quartet Silk Cut. Corridors of Light stays the course plotted by 2024’s self-titled release, and ups the ante with a dozen new originals by axemen Andrew Thorne and Justin McLean.
Joined once again by drummer Jayden Lee and bassist Aidan Phillips, Silk Cut recorded most of the album as a live unit at Chapel Studio, Puhoi, with sonic champion Dave Rhodes engineering. This captures a concentration of effort with the excitement of a shared moment. A magic component of the session’s sound was a 1970’s Marshall Plexi guitar amp once owned by AC/DC legend Malcolm Young. Hells bells indeed!!
Details and embellishments followed at Bell Curve Studio with the ever-convivial musical oracle Wayne Bell tracking vocals and more guitars – all mixed and mastered by Dave Rhodes.
Silk Cut celebrate the album’s release this Sunday November 2nd at Big Fan in Morningside, Tāmaki Makaurau. The show starts early, at 5.30pm, so you can be home at a decent hour.
