Indie Up-and-Comer First Reserve Releases Striking Debut EP There’s A God

Aotearoa New Zealand’s fast-rising indie rocker First Reserve released their eagerly awaited debut EP today, after months of anticipation from supporters. In the months leading up to the release, First Reserve – nom de plume of Wellington-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Connaghan (he/they) – has maintained a strong presence in NZ’s indie scene through both the release of singles and live shows. His most recent single ‘Time Song’ was followed by First Reserve’s addition to the lineup of Gisborne’s Rhythm & Vines festival.

There’s A God feels like a project released by an artist already several releases deep into their career. The EP is host to First Reserve’s finest songwriting, taking listeners on a journey across 6 tracks that range in genre from dark indie rock to dainty piano ballady. The EP’s title track is perhaps the perfect representation of Connaghan’s distinct songwriting style – intimate and vulnerable lyricism over considered instrumentation that culminates in a grand and heavy crescendo. This sound has earned First Reserve significant support opportunities for visiting international acts Hot Mulligan (US) and Hockey Dad (AU) as well as cherished local acts No Cigar, There’s A Tuesday, and PARK RD.

First Reserve will be celebrating the release of There’s A God with a free show in their hometown on the 15th of November as well as a sunset slot at NZ’s iconic Rhythm & Vines, welcoming what is sure to be an exciting 2026.
