Taranaki alt rock band DarkWater first formed as a 4-piece late 2009, and spent the next three years playing multiple shows and establishing the basis of their sound. When rhythm guitarist Ric Tucker and drummer Dan Christiansen departed the band in 2012, drummer Ross Kilgour joined original members Nathan Waipouri (lead vocals/guitar) and Merran Holden (bass/backing vocals/keys) to become a 3-piece.
The trio gelled, and in 2017 the band released their debut album You’re only as addicted as you’re willing to be. Then, in 2020 the pandemic years presented writer Waipouri with the inspiration for the band’s second album Turning Point, which was released in November 2024.
Following the release of Turning Point, DarkWater headed straight back into the studio to begin recording what’s shaping up to be another album of epic proportions.
The band is excited to announce the first single from this new collection, an unwavering and uplifting track titled ‘The Climb’ which will be released on Bandcamp, and all digital platforms (except iTunes) this Friday December 12th.
‘The Climb’ is loosely about the ascension that we all take throughout our journey. The mountain is the metaphor of life, the climber is you and I. The more we rise on that climb, the more we discover about ourselves and the world that we find ourselves in…“we know, because we think, therefore we are”.
‘The Climb’ was recorded at DWHQ New Plymouth, and mixed and mastered by Marc Gernhoefer of Tideline Studios.
