Wellington pop-rock four-piece Juna return on September 4 with new single ‘missing you (all of the time)’, a song about the moment a relationship ends, when you know it’s over but it hasn’t quite sunk in yet.
Led by Max, before Hannah’s perspective enters the story, the song follows two people through the same breakup. They still miss each other and there’s still a connection, but they also know the relationship isn’t right anymore.
“We wanted to capture the feeling that sometimes there is no right or wrong,” says Juna. “Sometimes you are just not right for each other, or sometimes you outgrow somebody.”
The song began with drummer Hayden Lam talking about his own breakup during a writing session. Hannah, Max and Hayden started working on the idea while reworking an earlier song called ‘Westside’, before bringing in friend and songwriter Nyjah Antony. Three long days in the studio later, they had an entirely new song.
‘Missing you (all of the time)’ also gives the first real taste of Juna’s forthcoming debut EP. Told in two halves, the project follows a relationship from the excitement and infatuation at the beginning through to its eventual end, with the new single closing the story.
It’s been a big first year for Juna. The band have built a following of more than 20,000 across social media, while debut single ‘Say So Little’ has reached 50,000 streams. They’ve supported Borderline in Auckland and Hamilton, played to 3,000 people at Gardens Magic and built a strong live following at home in Wellington.
Next up, Juna will support Emerson at San Fran in September before heading out on their own six-date New Zealand tour later this year.
