‘Nuku te Āio’ is the latest single from Rei’s upcoming album, Moisturise & Decolonise. The waiata features some reggae strums, RnB drums and of course some smooth sultry reo vocals from Rei. Releasing on Matariki, this is a tune about spreading peace and sharing some aroha. In a tumultuous time for Aotearoa and the world, this is a vibe that we all need right now!
‘Nuku te Āio’ is a well known tune amongst rangatahi (young people) in Aotearoa, ever since a video of Manaia Osborne singing it back in 2007 went viral. Originally written by Awanui Black, Rei has given the waiata his own special treatment, adding his own verses and switching up the beat. Rei is no stranger to reworking te reo classics, as his 2021 hit ‘Hoki Mai / Come Back’ (which interpolated E Papa Waiari) was a radio smash, topping shazam charts around Aotearoa.
