International Newsletter – June | Hune 2024

The summer touring season is in full swing across the Northern Hemisphere with artists from Aotearoa popping up at festivals, showcases and gigs around the globe. Here at home, we have just passed the shortest day and are celebrating Matariki, the Māori New Year, which is marked by the Matariki cluster of stars reappearing in our night sky. This is a time to reflect on the past year, celebrate the present, and plan for the year ahead.

Looking back on the past months, the bumper International Gig Guide attached to this month’s newsletter (9 pages!) shows the passing of a significant milestone – so far in 2024, there have been over 1,000 shows performed or announced for NZ artists overseas. It’s a record number since the Music Commission started working to help grow New Zealand music exports, and we are pretty confident that it’s the highest ever level of offshore activity for our home-grown artists.

Certainly something to celebrate this Matariki, and we look forward to even more amazing achievements for artists from Aotearoa taking their music to the world over the coming year.
