Following the release of his debut album Driftwood, Casual Healing (aka Nikau Te Huki) has recorded the soulful roots reggae waiata ‘Water the Good Seed’, featuring the mystical Hongi Slicker (aka Troy Kingi). The single is set for release on 6th December 2024.
With this sweet reggae track, Casual Healing draws on the nostalgic sounds of the golden era of music. Te Huki shares, “It was written as a mantra to banish bad habits and serve as an uplifting reminder to practice the simple habits that keep us smiling and untroubled.”
Produced by Te Huki at his studio, Te Whare Chur, the track began with a bassline inspired by a Midnite track called Same Boat. Te Huki shares, “I put the beat together a few months after Driftwood came out. The melody, rhythm, and lyrics flowed through, and before long, the song was alive. I wanted someone else to breathe life into it. Troy Kingi hit me up one day, so I sent him the demo, and he sent back 20 tracks of vocals.”
Te Huki and Kingi hope the song encourages listeners to learn, uncover, and share their true history, while shining light on the forces of love and fear, and documenting a hopeful prophecy for the mokomokopuna—the wise children of tomorrow.
‘Water the Good Seed’ is the highly anticipated first single from a new series of four EPs scheduled for release in 2025. Each EP will represent a fundamental element of Te Taiao, the natural world. ‘Water the Good Seed’ serves as the opening track of this series, setting the stage for a cascade of new music to come.
With an ever-growing national and international following, Casual Healing has recently completed sold-out tours of both Aotearoa and Australia. His debut album Driftwood has garnered significant love, and fans are eagerly awaiting more from this young, prolific songwriter.
