Born as a punk/triphop song and created as part of 2024 Waiata Anthems programme, MĀ collaborates with Tony Douglas to evolutionise this controversial waiata into the Electro Bass/ DnB scene.
‘Pūhā me te Porohewa’ was a waiata created to hold safe spaces to express your riri (anger) – An emotion that can be disregarded and misunderstood – “If only we focused more on expressing it safely rather than it bottling it up until you explode”.
Over the last three years, MĀ has won over audiences around her home country with a distinctly Indigenous blend of abstract downtempo rap, D.I.Y neo-soul and lush ambient music. Born from grief, self-love and an attentive awareness of the natural world, her songs value te taiao, whakapapa, manaakitanga, humour and emotional honesty.
Tony Douglas is a music producer from Rotorua, now based in Pōneke, Aotearoa. Breaking into the local scene in 2011, he is known for his innovative and unique beats. Tony has collaborated with a range of artists, including Nauti, Melodownz, Rizvan, KVKA, Louie Knuxx and many more, establishing himself as a key figure in New Zealand’s music landscape.
