Last winter saw the release of Heidi Simpson’s ‘icy girl’, channeling heartbreak and emotional detachment into a shimmering indie-pop anthem that hits like two peppermints and a menthol vape. Pairing frosty hooks with breezy production from Josh Naley (a.k.a. Wells*), the track was featured in Rolling Stone Australia and has garnered over 50,000 streams.
Conceived at a NYMPHO afterparty, ‘icy girl (Teddyyy Remix)’ reimagines its titular character in a strobe-lit nightclub. “Dance a bit, play along” Simpson sings over syncopated bass stabs and an on-and-on synth arpeggio. The maximalist production pulls from hyperpop and trance, playing up the latter with an Ibiza-style breakdown and drop that introduces new vocal contributions from Teddyyy.
‘icy girl (Teddyyy remix)’ comes as a bonus release ahead of Heidi Simpson’s eagerly-awaited debut EP.
About Heidi Simpson:
Heidi Simpson emerged as a new solo artist in 2023 with her catchy debut single, ‘What’s on Tv?‘, the first release for her after being in LAIIKA, a teenage girl pop duo who toured New Zealand, played maj festivals like Rhythm and Vines and released an EP in 2021.
After the release of ‘What’s on TV?’ Heidi and her band performed a string of shows, including a mini tour with There’s a Tuesday and an opening slot for cult indie artist Princess Chelsea. Her 2024 run of singles showcased her talent for infectious songwriting across an expansive sonic palette, with ‘icy girl’ sitting alongside the soaring ‘Vampire’, turbulent ‘late to the party song’ and euphoric ‘best kept secret’. Heidi is currently collaborating with an array of impressive young producers, including Hugo Chan, Harry Charles, Josh Naley, and Lucian Rice, as she emerges as a fresh and exciting presence to the indie pop scene.
About Teddyyy:
Teddyyy is the musical project of Theodore Holmstead-Scott (Rangitāne o Wairau), raised in Te-Whanganui-a-Tara and based in Tāmaki Makaurau. After graduating from Elam School of Fine Arts, he co-founded the iconic queer club night NYMPHO. Weaving pop acapellas through a tapestry of ambient, trance and emotionally-driven EDM, Teddyyy has opened for hyperpop icons 100 gecs, Doss, horsegiirL, Umru and Petal Supply. His ear-candy SoundCloud mashups have garnered over 1,000,000 streams, with his viral Ethel Cain remix featured in JW Anderson’s SS24 show at London Fashion Week.
