Industry Internship Programme

About the Programme

The Industry Internship Programme is an initiative to support the next generation of music industry professionals, and help emerging music professionals and recent tertiary graduates gain valuable industry experience to kick-start their careers.

Running since 2018, the Programme has successfully placed Interns into a wide range of industry roles each year – including working in recording studios, events management, live music venues, PR and publishing companies, and plenty more.

Interns are mentored by their Host Organisation and develop skills, knowledge and industry networks during their placement – while Host Organisations benefit from having a fresh perspective as well as knowing they are lifting up the next generation of music industry professionals. All internships are paid positions at the NZ Living Wage rate.

2025 Industry Internship Programme Role Descriptions

EARLY CLOSING DATE INTERNSHIPS

1. ARTIST LIAISON - Wellington | Te Whanganui-a-Tara

ARTIST LIAISON – Wellington | Te Whanganui-a-Tara

– Early January 2025 start, for 13 weeks

– Part-time hours increasing to full-time hours in the lead- up to and during the festival

In this role you’ll be assisting the Festival Coordinator and wider festival team with the planning and successful delivery of a major inner-city festival. This role will include a variety of administrative tasks, from communicating with the artists, to confirming travel details and accommodation for out-of-town artists. You will contribute to reviewing marketing materials, and when needed, offer support in areas such as accessibility venue management, licensing and technical production. You must be confident working in a self-directed manner when required, and have strong administrative skills- including use of Word, Airtable, Excel, Outlook, scheduling, and budgeting.

2. SOCIAL MEDIA & PUBLICITY ASSISTANT - Auckland | Tāmaki Makaurau

SOCIAL MEDIA AND PUBLICITY ASSISTANT – Auckland | Tāmaki Makaurau

– December 2024 start, for 16 weeks

– Two days per week (16 hours), flexible

In this role you will be working with a booking agency and concert promoter service. You will be working alongside the Office Manager assisting with social media content creation and marketing for the agency’s shows, assisting with ticket price monitoring and performing administrative work. Additionally, you will be assisting the Publicist with press release writing, interview scheduling, social media, campaign wrap reporting and accompanying the Publicist on media days. You will have good computer and social media skills, be personable and friendly, and enjoy working in a team environment.

AUCKLAND INTERNSHIPS

3. MUSIC DATA & RESEARCH ASSISTANT - Auckland | Tāmaki Makaurau

MUSIC DATA & RESEARCH ASSISTANT – Auckland | Tāmaki Makaurau

– March 2025 start, for 16 weeks

– Two days per week (16 hours), flexible

This internship offers an opportunity to work across research and administrative roles within a music rights management organisation related to the collection and inputting of New Zealand Music data. You’ll be interested in learning more about the music industry, music licensing and data acquisition. You’ll have a strong attention to detail, experience in research and will be adept at data entry. A basic knowledge of Microsoft 365 Suite is a bonus.

4. STUDIO, VENUE & PROGRAMME ASSISTANT - Auckland | Tāmaki Makaurau

STUDIO, VENUE & PROGRAMME ASSISTANT – Auckland | Tāmaki Makaurau

– February 2025 start, for 16 weeks

– Two days per week (16 hours), flexible – some evening and weekend work required

In this role you will be working at a recording studio and music venue on a variety of tasks across the whole organisation. You will be supporting the studio team with bookings, studio supervision, and keeping the studios tidy and clean, assisting with the booking and operation of shows in the venue, and assisting with the coordination and delivery of music focused programmes. This will be a dynamic role with lots of opportunity and variety. You will be a confident communicator, with strong computer literacy skills, and an ability to work with a variety of people. You will be passionate about music and eager to contribute to the music community by helping others. Some experience with Microsoft 365 Suite programmes, DAWs, audio recording and/or live music/light production is a plus. A full driver’s licence is required.

5. RECORDING STUDIO ASSISTANT - Auckland | Tāmaki Makaurau

RECORDING STUDIO ASSISTANT – Auckland | Tāmaki Makaurau

– March 2025 start, for 16 weeks

– Two days per week (16 hours), flexible

In this role you will be working with The Recording Studio Owner to learn how to assist a producer and engineer in a commercial environment. You’ll be assisting with setting up recording sessions, post production editing, engineering sessions, studio maintenance, and booking sessions. Some basic knowledge of Pro Tools, audio engineering and production is required for this role- although formal qualifications are not a requirement. You must be self-motivated, punctual and friendly, as well as a good communicator.

6. CONTENT AND A&R INTERN - Auckland | Tāmaki Makaurau

CONTENT AND A&R INTERN

– February 2025 start, for 18 weeks

– Two days per week (12 hours), flexible

In this role you will be working at a leading New Zealand digital platform championing musical talent from Aotearoa and beyond. You will be assisting the Magazine Editor with content creation, social media management, and digital strategy. This will see you working in an artist facing capacity, supporting musicians with their content and storytelling for the magazine. This role will also see you assisting with responsibilities related to A&R (Artists and Repertoire) as part of the organisation’s growing music label. You will gain hands-on experience in identifying emerging artists and helping them refine their sound and brand. You will have strong communication, writing and social media skills, video and content editing skills, be personable and friendly, and enjoy meeting and working with new people.

7. PUBLICITY, PROMOTIONS & RETAIL ASSISTANT - Auckland | Tāmaki Makaurau

PUBLICITY, PROMOTIONS & RETAIL ASSISTANT

– January 2025 start, for 20 weeks

– Two days per week (16 hours), flexible

For this role you’ll be working with a music and events specialist firm offering promotions and marketing services. You will need fantastic communication and writing skills, love meeting new people, be organised and willing to learn, and have great attention to detail. You’ll be assisting the Head Publicist across a range of activities including setting up and distributing press releases and electronic newsletters, creating media plans and monitoring media coverage, managing social media accounts, and accompanying artists and bands to interviews. As an adjunct you would be doing some hours in a central Auckland retail music outlet to learn another perspective on the organisation’s role within the industry. Strong social media skills and a love of NZ music necessary, retail experience a plus.

8. OPERATIONS & PRODUCTION ASSISTANT - Auckland | Tāmaki Makaurau

OPERATIONS & PRODUCTION ASSISTANT

– January 2025 start, for 16 weeks

– Two days per week (16 hours), flexible

This is a varied role supporting the team with preparations, logistics and operations for live events and live music productions. You’ll be working in both administrative and production roles: preparing event documentation and technical requirements; helping with preparing and packing stage; moving lighting, audio and backline equipment in and out of vehicles; assisting with crew and transport logistics; and talking with organisers, musicians and clients about what they need for their events. Live production skills such as lighting, live band mixing or AV technician knowledge will be helpful for this role. You’ll have an eye for detail and enjoy problem solving, and be equally comfortable with office work and physical work. A driver’s licence is essential for this role, and knowledge of how to drive a manual would be useful.

WELLINGTON INTERNSHIPS

9. CONTENT ASSISTANT - Wellington | Te Whanganui-a-Tara

CONTENT ASSISTANT

In this role you will be working alongside the Station Manager and Programme Director at an independent radio station. This role will see you schedule and process content for both broadcast/online spaces. You will work closely with the programming and sales teams on tasks such as social media content creation and website administration. You will be regularly engaging with industry stakeholders, particularly during festival season (February – March). You will be working onsite at these festivals on a variety of tasks with the wider radio team. You will be personable, have good time management and be passionate about local music. You will have a good understanding of social media and an eye for detail. Video and audio editing experience is a plus.

10. BOOKINGS & EVENTS ASSISTANT - Wellington | Te Whanganui-a-Tara

BOOKINGS & EVENTS ASSISTANT – Wellington | Te Whanganui-a-Tara

– March 2025 start, for 16 weeks

– Two days per week (16 hours), flexible – some evening and weekend work required

This role will see you working in a new, medium-sized live music venue. You will be assisting the Bookings Manager and Marketing Manager on the bookings, logistics and delivery of live music shows in the venue. Your role will include assisting with booking shows, liaising with promoters, setting up show ticketing, liaising with the Bar Manager and Technical Manager, and assisting with promoting shows on social media platforms. The role will also include assisting on the delivery of shows during gig nights, with scope to learn technical skills in lighting and stage management. You must be personable, good at communication and have reasonable computer and social media skills. A driver’s licence is a plus.

CHRISTCHURCH INTERNSHIPS

11. EVENT BOOKINGS & PROMOTIONS ASSISTANT - Christchurch | Ōtautahi

EVENT BOOKINGS & PROMOTIONS ASSISTANT – Christchurch | Ōtautahi

– January 2025 start, for 16 weeks

– Two days per week (16 hours), flexible – some evening and weekend work required

In this role you will be working in a small music venue alongside the Co-Owner/Bookings Manager to assist with the administrative workload. A combination of on-site and remote work, you’ll be assisting with advancing bookings for shows; assisting with coordinating events, including an artist seminar series; assisting with marketing and promotion for regular events; and contributing ideas towards the visibility and cohesion of three spaces (music venue, art gallery and recording space) that are in the same premises. You will be proficient in using Google Suite and social media platforms, have some basic graphic design skills, be able to interact with a wide variety of demographics, and you will have some knowledge of the music community in Christchurch. A full driver’s licence is required.

12. VENUE INTERN - Christchurch | Ōtautahi

In this role you’ll get experience and/or exposure to all aspects of the operation of a small music venue. A combination of on-site and remote work, you’ll be assisting with responding to enquiries, booking shows, liaising with bands, gathering and distributing promotional material. You will also work alongside the Tech Manager and Bar Manager on the delivery of the live shows, including assisting in preparing all equipment and gear for live shows and coordinating gear and hospitality riders. You must have good communication and team skills, and be proficient using Google Suite and Meta social media platforms.

13. STUDIO MANAGER ASSISTANT - Christchurch | Ōtautahi

STUDIO MANAGER ASSISTANT – Christchurch | Ōtautahi

– January 2025 start, for 16 weeks

– Two days per week (16 hours), flexible

In this role you will be working at music education and recording studio assisting the Studio Manager. Tasks will include assisting with the development of social media channels, assisting with the planning and promotion of a songwriting competition, and assisting with the planning and promotion of a holiday programme. You will have strong social media skills and administrative skills. Experience with marketing and events is a plus. You will be personable and friendly, and be passionate about showcasing and supporting emerging music artists.

DUNEDIN INTERNSHIPS

14. RECORDING STUDIO ASSISTANT - Dunedin | Ōtepoti

RECORDING STUDIO ASSISTANT – Dunedin | Ōtepoti

– March 2025 start, for 16 weeks

– Two days per week (16 hours), flexible

In this role you will be working with the Studio Manger to learn about the processes involved in running a recording studio. You’ll be assisting with setting up recording sessions, post production editing, engineering sessions, studio maintenance, booking sessions, and administrative tasks including assisting with funding applications. You will also be learning about studio repair and gear maintenance. You must have some basic understanding of audio production and recording processes, and be comfortable working with diverse clientele including youth from challenging backgrounds.

15. EVENTS ASSISTANT - Dunedin | Ōtepoti

EVENTS ASSISTANT – Dunedin | Ōtepoti

– February 2025 start, for 16 weeks

– Two days per week (16 hours), flexible

Working with the Events Operations Manager across a wide range of student-focused events, you’ll be assisting with the planning, logistics and execution of events. You will be doing artist bookings, and acting as Artist Liaison at events, as well as performing some administrative tasks. Good general computer skills are needed for this role and you’ll have a good work ethic and be willing to pitch in on event sites.

16. LIVE MUSIC VENUE ASSISTANT - Dunedin | Ōtepoti

LIVE MUSIC VENUE ASSISTANT – Dunedin | Ōtepoti

– January 2025 start, for 16 weeks

– Two days per week (16 hours), flexible – some evening and weekend work required

In this role you’ll be assisting the venue team with the operation of a small, new, music venue. A combination of on-site and remote work, you’ll be assisting the Venue Manager with responding to enquiries, booking shows, liaising with artists, as well as gathering and distributing promotional material. You will also be assisting the Sound engineer/Venue Technician on the delivery of shows, including assisting with pack in/pack out and backline set up for shows, as well as delivering social media coverage of the shows. You must have good communication and team skills, social media and computer skills, and some knowledge of live music scenes and NZ touring artists. You will be self-motivated and enthusiastic.

NELSON INTERNSHIP

17. MUSIC EDUCATION & EVENTS ASSISTANT - Nelson | Whakatū

– February 2025, for 16 weeks

– 16 hours per week, days flexible

In this role you’ll be working on the day to day operations of a regional musical arts centre. You’ll be involved in event planning and execution, scheduling and coordination of teaching sessions, helping to develop educational programmes, as well as helping with social media promotion and providing administrative support. You will be a detail oriented, organised and motivated individual who is enthusiastic about the music industry and looking to develop their administrative and coordination skills.

KERIKERI INTERNSHIP

18. PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE TECHNICAL & MARKETING INTERN - Kerikeri

PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE TECHNICAL & MARKETING INTERN – Kerikeri

– February 2025 start, for 16 weeks

– Two days per week (16 hours), flexible – some evening and weekend work required

You will assist the Operations, Events, Marketing and Technician personnel in the set-up and running of events at a music, events and theatre venue, gaining valuable experience across multiple facets of the organisation. Responsibilities include assisting with the logistics and running of events of up to 1000 people, as well as sound and lighting for live shows. You will capture and manage content for social media and marketing efforts, help with event set-up including AV for events, and assist with inventory and maintenance scheduling. Additionally, you’ll be involved in database management, perform box office duties such as ticket sales and guest list management, and contribute to the creation and distribution of marketing newsletters. Some experience in sound and lighting is required, and you must be comfortable working with social media and spreadsheets.
