Ahead of Going Global, the New Zealand music industry’s export conference, Recorded Music NZ, APRA AMCOS and the NZ Music Commission are collaborating on a project to improve the measurement of NZ music export revenues.

We are inviting artists, labels and aggregators to participate in the project by providing data about their export revenues. The data will be kept confidential and only used in anonymous aggregated form in reporting so no individual or entity will be identifiable.

The deadline for your input is Friday 14 August – but the earlier you can provide data the more helpful it will be for the project. We are asking participants to complete the attached spreadsheet and email it directly to mark.d.robinson@pwc.com

Background

Recorded Music NZ, APRA AMCOS and the NZ Music Commission have commissioned PwC on an annual basis to publish a study on the economic contribution of the NZ music industry, which is then used to advocate for the sector.

This year we want to broaden the sources of export revenues for the study. We believe that growing export revenues is key to the future of our industry. To help build knowledge, better understand what support artists and industry need in the export space, and to strengthen the case for more investment in our industry with government, we want to do a better job of tracking export revenues and understanding the stories behind the numbers.

Request for data

We hope that you will want to participate in this project and provide some data on overseas earnings over the past three calendar years. The more responses we can collect, the more accurate the insights will be across New Zealand artists.

PwC’s report is looking to track New Zealand artists’ income from music – including royalties, performance payments and other income – earned outside NZ, regardless of where those artists are based.

PwC would like the total values for each of the last three calendar years – or whichever years you are able to provide – for you, if you are a NZ artist, or for the NZ artists your organisation works with, for each of:

Income from recordings and musical works including sales, publishing, neighbouring rights, licensing and synchronisation revenue outside NZ
Income from live performance and touring internationally
The data should be gross income i.e. before any expenses (including tax) are deducted.

This data may be provided by:

Music managers or accountants on behalf of their clients
One member of a band on behalf of the band
Labels or aggregators on behalf of NZ artists they represent
PwC and Recorded Music NZ (if it receives data) will treat the information as confidential and will only use the data in aggregated form for the purpose of the study. If you wish, the data can be provided to PwC on the basis that no data will be shared with Recorded Music NZ.

Alternatively if you wish to provide data directly to Recorded Music NZ via Jo Oliver you are of course welcome to do that.
