grass/roots: Small-scale Grants For Grassroots Artists in Pōneke

grass/roots is a brand-new project by Gabriel Stuart, a final-year Music Industry student at Massey University. Born from discussions with fellow musicians and industry workers, grass/roots wants to help up-and-coming artists with micro-grants, funded by the local community which it lives in. Operating similarly to a NZ On Air grant, grass/roots is designed for the scene that it operates in, the grassroots music community of Pōneke.

With a goal of $4,000 on its Boosted campaign, grass/roots is aiming to provide 6-8 micro-grants of ~$500 to Pōneke’s next generation of musical talent.

We are doing this project because we believe that the conditions for grassroots musicians currently are tough and discouraging, with a lack of support and the foundations to thrive, many musicians give up on their dream. We wish to make a small difference for this community in Wellington/Pōneke not only by offering these musicians support financially, and also showing them that their community has their back.” – Gabriel Stuart, grass/roots Project Manager.

With the raised funds, grass/roots will host a panel of 3 people who represent different sectors of the Music Industry, who’ll scour through the applications and determine where the money will end up. Check out grass/roots’s panel here: Nick Medder (Radioactive.FM Station Manager), Bianca Bailey (Festival Director – CupaDupa), TBC.

Going live on the 7th of September, grass/roots’s Boosted campaign will be live for a month, ending on October 5th, with funding decisions to be made shortly afterwards.
