After the success of her 2019 Sportsman of the Year album, book and tour, Jan Hellriegel is back with a new show, ‘If Not Now, When?‘, which she is taking around the country this September, October and November. The show is a full entertainment package, with a mix of piano tunes, comedy, stories – and a decent dose of theatricality.
The ‘If Not Now, When?‘ tour will also deliver something extra special, as Hellriegel unveils a brand new project which she promises to be an even bigger surprise than Sportsman was. Huge, in fact. Fans will also be treated to favourites from across her career.
Hellriegel says, “Piano was my first instrument, and I have wanted to do a show like this since I was a kid – I just haven’t been bold enough, so I am hoping fortune does in fact ‘favour the bold’”.
Jan Hellriegel’s love affair with music started when she learned classical piano as a child, and as a teenager she took vocal coaching from Dame Sister Mary Leo, whose protégés included Kiri Te Kanawa.
Hellriegel signed with Warner Music NZ in 1990 as their first local signing and NZ’s first female singer/songwriter for a full development deal. Her debut solo album was released in 1992, with singles reaching the top charts. She supported artists like David Byrne and The Cure that year.
In 1994, Hellriegel moved to Melbourne under Warner Music Australia and released her second album, Tremble, in 1995. She supported Jeff Buckley twice during his tours in Australia. Returning to NZ, she recorded Sentimental Fool and left Warner in 1997. In 1999, she self-released the EP Melusine but later took a break to focus on family.
Continuing to write, Hellriegel released All Grown Up in 2009 on her label, Blind Date, to critical acclaim. In 2013, she released Lost Songs, a collection of unreleased tracks. In 2017, she founded Songbroker Music Publishing, a leading independent publisher in Australasia.
