Na’amah Offers an Intimate and Conversational take on ‘How Great Thou Art’

Aotearoa based singer-songwriter and folk artist Na’amah releases her debut single as an independent artist – ‘How Great Thou Art’, out today. Listen to the track, mastered by Josh Llewellyn from Downbeat Mastering here.

Na’amah offers a conversational and intimate take on the timeless hymn ‘How Great Thou Art’, with a rawness and sincerity that invites listeners into quiet reflection and praise.

“We used to sing ‘Whakaaria Mai’ (How Great Thou Art) in my Te Reo class when I was 11 years old and it was my favourite
because I found the melody stunningly beautiful. I later realised it was a hymn, which made it even more special to me.”

“When I set up the mic in my bedroom and started recording, my guitar was in this weird tuning that I made up and that I was writing in at the time. I think that allowed ‘How Great Thou Art’ to come out the way it did. I had never actually sung it like that before, I was just trying to be honest and sincere in that moment.”

Na’amah is an Auckland-based singer-songwriter, session musician, teacher, and co-founder and director of Wāhine In Jazz. Her original music speaks to her experiences as a woman in her 20’s navigating relationships, faith, mental health, and connection. These themes are knitted into a warm, achingly personal, conversational and sentimental blanket of jazz-inspired folk songs, coloured by odd time signature grooves, lyrical melodies, and intimate vocals.
