NZ On Air x Te Māngai Pāho: Waiata Takitahi Funding Decisions December 2024

Ko te reo tēnei o Te Māngai Pāho me Irirangi te Motu e pāoro atu nei ki a koutou.

Te Māngai Pāho
me Irirangi te Motu are pleased to announce the results of the latest Te Māngai Pāho and NZ On Air co-funded music round, Waiata Takitahi, which looks to support waiata with great broadcast and online audience potential, and incorporates a minimum 25% te reo Māori in the song lyrics.

For this December 2024 Waiata Takitahi round, Te Māngai Pāho me Irirangi te Motu are able to invest up to $15,000 – including a mandatory $1,000 Artist Creation Fee – per project (plus GST if required) in 14 waiata for release in the coming year. Supporting the creation of new bilingual waiata aims to assist te reo Māori to reach contemporary audiences through local broadcast and online music spaces.

Since its beginning in 2020, this co-funded round has now successfully funded 72 waiata. This reflects an increase in audience engagement with music which embraces te reo Māori, further seen via the Waiata Anthems series, as well as the Reo Māori SongHubs initiative, courtesy of APRA AMCOS NZ.

Waiata Takitahi commitments include funding for a Mātanga Reo – a language consultant available for any artist who may need support in fully realising their work with confidence and clarity. This funding also supports the recording process, the creation of video content, as well as the promotion and marketing of the song – all in the hopes of enhancing the discoverability of these great bilingual waiata for the audiences of Aotearoa and beyond.

Te Māngai Pāho me Irirangi te Motu gratefully thank this month’s judging panel for their hard work and considerable expertise in deciding upon the final results.
