Rising NZ Artist Lucy Gray Releases New Single ‘Trying So Hard’

It’s become clear that Lucy Gray is a unique pop force to be reckoned with, curating a cult fanbase around the globe; she’s unignorable. She’s fresh back in the country from supporting Them & I on their sold-out Australia tour in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane where she debuted the fact that her long awaited track ‘Trying So Hard’ would be coming out August 29th. The day has finally come.

‘Trying So Hard’ is an emotionally charged, indie-pop diamond in the ruff. Gray introduces this song at every live show by saying ‘This is a song I wrote about a time in my life where I was very in love with someone and they were not very much in love with me back – and while I hope you don’t relate to that.. I know you do’, and you couldn’t encapsulate the song better.

‘Trying So Hard’ is a song about trying too hard to get the attention of someone who couldn’t care less, and trying to not let that feeling drive you insane. ‘I’m trying so hard not to give you what you want, I’m trying so hard, you keep messing up’ perfectly sums up how it feels to want someone who would much rather play hard to get, just for the sake of feeling important.

The creation and production of this song was inspired by the build and angst of Lizzy McAlpine’s ‘Ceilings’ and ‘Erase Me’. On top of Gracie Abrams’ instrumentation in ‘Mess It Up’, and Gigi Perez’s and Sydney Rose’s lyricism. Gray just hit 100K on her breakout hit ‘Polar Orbit, her most recent single charted at #9 on the Hot NZ 20 Charts, she’s received NewTracks placements, and she recently performed at Live Nation’s Ones to Watch, and supported Frankie Venter on her ‘like it like that’ tour. Not to mention, Gray’s building an empire on social media of a collective 100K followers.

Her plans to promote this song include doing a pop-up acoustic show and meet + greet in Auckland, where she’ll play an acoustic set and connect with fans. To push this event Gray’s running a pre-save campaign for sign-ups to this event. She’s also supporting Keli Holiday in Christchurch at Loons, on September 10th to support her release.
