In collaboration with RNZ Concert and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, SOUNZ is pleased to announce the film release of composer Jeremy Mayall‘s Ngā Tohu o te Taiao, a family-friendly schools concert curated specifically for tamariki.
Commissioned, produced and performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Ngā Tohu o te Taiao is a journey into the wonders of the natural world, beginning with a musical retelling of the Māori creation story. The concert is pitched to tamariki aged 8-12, but is suitable for all ages. The music is supplemented by live sand art drawing from Marcus Winter, who responds to the music and words presented through this creative medium.
Host Chris Lam Sam takes the audience on a journey through Aotearoa New Zealand’s seasonal signs of nature, where and when to find them, and how to care for them. Chris also teaches us a special waiata ā-ringa (action song) for children to sing with the orchestra.
Performed by the NZSO, conductor James Judd, with Chris Lam Sam (narrator) and Marcus Winter (sand art). Audio recorded by David McCaw and Darryl Stack for RNZ Concert. Additional audio recorded by John Neill. Additional music by Jeremy Mayall, Horomona Horo and Chris Lam Sam. Filmed and edited for SOUNZ by Chris Watson. Film funded by NZ On Air.
