Tāmaki Makaurau’s Post-punks Family Band Return with New Single ‘Spit’

Sam Shepherd (he/him), Maté Vella (he/him) and Brandee Thorburn (she/her) are Family Band, a gnarly noise group based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa.

Formed in 2023 while all three members were flatting together, Family Band take influence from Chicago noise rock and late 00’s trans-Tasman post-punk. In their short time together Family Band have become one of Tāmaki’s favourite live acts supporting cult favourite international talent Worst Vibes (AUS) and Liturgy (USA).

Today Family Band share ‘Spit‘, the second single from their debut The Dog Box (out digitally on April 30 via Sunreturn).

Following in their chart topping debut single ‘Large Dirt Piles‘, ‘Spit‘ continues to display the band’s affinity for sharp guitar tones and baritone growls that are underpinned by a grating repetitiveness.

“I wrote the song as a tribute to the terrible landlord of my old cafe,” explains Vella, “One time she walked past a literal hole in the wall to complain about some dust on the window sill.” The cafe in question closed following the ongoing lockdowns to combat COVID-19 with Vella reflecting that the track is also about “feeling like a failure when something you work on really hard doesn’t work out.”

With the release of ‘Spit‘ the band are in high spirits “This is kind of the most structurally normal song we have so I hope people will like that. Having two songs out is really great, I’m excited for people to hear the rest of the EP!”
