The Beatniks’ Release New EP, Today / Tomorrow

Today / Tomorrow builds on the momentum of their single ‘Another Day’, which climbed to the top of the SRN Top 10 in August. This release marks a turning point for the band, shifting away from the surf-grunge energy of their debut album Archetype and moving into fresh, unexplored alt-rock territory.

Running just shy of 20 minutes, the six tracks form what the band call “a concept album for the modern attention span.” Cohesive yet varied, the songs are connected by underspoken motifs and emotive themes. “Each track stands on its own, but we’re excited to see who notices the subtle threads that tie them together”.

The lead single ‘NikSick’ is the closest link to the band’s earlier sound, packed full of driving rhythms and soaring hooks. Like most of the EP, it began as a jam that grew into something more. Elsewhere, the reflective instrumental ‘Kettle Song’ was written and recorded in a single take by guitarists Logan and Sam, while the rest of the band dozed during a candid studio break. The closing track “Lead Me (To Tomorrow)” is jarring and chaotic, yet perfectly encapsulates the themes of the EP in its dramatic finale.

Lyrically and emotionally, the EP traces the daily turbulence of being in your early twenties. “We tried to encapsulate all the emotions that come with this infamously confusing stage of life,” the band explains. Across its 20 minutes, listeners are taken through frustration, confusion, joy, melancholia — and maybe, finally, a little peace.

The EP was recorded at Seaward Sounds in Port Chalmers with the incredible Tom Bell who both mixed and mastered all of the tracks with his lovely assistant Rory Humm.

The EP will be accompanied by a co-headline tour of NZ with IVY in October.

They’re kicking things off down south in Dunedin with a show at Pearl Diver on October 3, followed by an all ages gig at the same spot on October 5. From there, it’s up to the capital for a night at Meow in Wellington on October 9, then on to Auckland for a set at Double Whammy on October 11. They’ll be wrapping it all up in style at Wunderbar in Christchurch on October 17. It’s shaping up to be a huge run so don’t miss the chance to catch them live and loud in your city.
