Video of the Day: The Datsuns – ‘Harmonic Generator’

Today’s Video of the Day is from legendary hard-rockers The Datsuns and their 2003 EP Harmonic Generator. We’re featuring their mighty video for the titular track as part of this week’s theme of “amplifying innovation”.

Harmonic Generator’ contains deep layers of good ol’ kiwi innovation. The Datsuns rocketed on an international level for their distinct sound – crowned chart favourites amongst Aotearoa, the UK and beyond.

Harmonic Generator’ inspired a fellow innovator from home: Paul Crowther. Paul Crowther of Crowther Audio renowned for his gamechanging ‘Hot Cakes’ pedals, named his two-stage special wave-shaping distortion circuit pedal ‘Prunes & Custard Harmonic Generator-Intermodulator’ after The Datsuns’ tune. This pedal was voted Overall Pedal of the Year by Guitar & Bass Magazine in 2006.

Paul Crowther’s handmade pedal creations took the world by storm, simply by word of mouth. Paul quickly became inundated with mail orders, establishing Crowther Audio. Despite the raging success, Paul has kept his team to him and his wife Joanne, with their hands holding the true recipe to their famous Hot Cakes.

Transport yourself to the early rise of The Datsuns and Crowther Audio and see how they became cultural pillars within their own fields. Enjoy and tune in āpōpō (and every day of New Zealand Music Month) for a new Video of the Day!
