Washing Machine Jukeboxes Bring Unreleased Aotearoa Music to Auckland Laundromats This May

FRESH LAUNDRY is the new public art installation turning Auckland laundromats into unlikely music discovery destinations this May. Five washing machine jukeboxes will be installed in laundromats across Tāmaki Makaurau during NZ Music Month from 1 to 31 May 2026, playing a specially compiled album of Aotearoa C-Sides, for anyone waiting on a spin cycle to finish.

Not an A-Side. Not a B-Side. Music that would have never been heard. The FRESH LAUNDRY compilation is built entirely from local C-Sides: songs written, recorded, and loved by artists – but left sitting on a hard drive, unreleased. Genre doesn’t matter. Length doesn’t matter. The compilation aims to unearth and celebrate the rich, diverse soundscape of Aotearoa – in the most unexpected of places.

“Laundromats suspend time in an unusual, wonderful way,” says Creative Director Jefferson Chen aka Goodspace. “And as a result, people are more receptive to what’s in front of them. It’s a project that highlights the importance of the spaces in which we listen to music, and how unique moments of discovery can occur in ordinary settings – we’re just facilitating and curating it.”

The installation intends to breathe new life into our beloved city and introduce small joys into people’s daily lives with surprise art encounters that champion the artists who make up this city.

Got a C-Side? FRESH LAUNDRY is currently seeking C-Side submissions from artists across Aotearoa. Submissions close 31 March 2026.
