We Will Ride Fast Releases a Duet with Frances Ellen: ‘When Will Fire Become Spirit?’

Tauranga-based psychedelic synth-popper We Will Ride Fast’s Post-Punk Ontological Investigation continues with the release of a new single, ‘When Will Fire Become Spirit?’
This is a new direction for We Will Ride Fast’s Kyle Sattler: the single is a duet with fellow Tauranga-based songwriter Frances Ellen, known for her graceful fusion of introspective melodic indie-pop with subtle jazz undertones. Ellen last year released her eponymous EP Frances Ellen, which was co-written and produced with Reb Fountain.

‘When Will Fire Become Spirit?’ is a song that explores emotional vulnerability, uncertainty, and longing. The song reflects on a deep and emotional journey shared between two people and the exposure of raw feelings as they metaphorically open a door to something new.

But there’s hesitation and fear of the unknown, symbolised by a struggle with confusion, potential loss, nostalgia, and unanswered questions about fleeting attraction.

“When will fire become spirit?” is a metaphor for transformation, and wondering when intense emotions (fire) will evolve into something meaningful or eternal (spirit).
